Chief Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has identified Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as the biggest challenge currently facing the party. Wike, who served as the immediate past governor of Rivers State and is still a PDP chieftain, now holds a position in the Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
In an interview with New Telegraph, Sowunmi highlighted the tension within the PDP, stating, “This is the biggest elephant in our room and the most significant challenge we face in the PDP.
The main polarizing issue is Wike’s role in the current government. Although he claims to remain a member of the PDP, one must question whether his spirit, body, and soul are still aligned with the party.”
Sowunmi noted that the situation is unprecedented, but past experiences make party members wary. He referenced late Chief Bola Ige, who served in the PDP government under former President Olusegun Obasanjo while remaining a member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). “There is a precedent for these situations, but that doesn’t mean we should accept them without scrutiny,” he added.
He also mentioned that the PDP has a disciplinary committee in place, urging anyone with substantial evidence of wrongdoing against any member to present it to the committee for due consideration.
