Russia and Ukraine Swap 115 Prisoners of War in Unexpected Exchange

On Saturday, Russia and Ukraine announced a surprising exchange of 115 prisoners of war from each side, just over two weeks after Kyiv’s unexpected incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

This exchange took place as Kyiv continued its offensive in Kursk and Russia set its sights on more towns in eastern Ukraine. Remarkably, the swap occurred on Ukrainian Independence Day.

Both nations expressed their gratitude to the United Arab Emirates, which played a crucial role in mediating the swap deal.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the return of Ukrainian defenders, including soldiers from the National Guard, Armed Forces, Navy, and State Border Guard Service. He shared images of these men wrapped in Ukrainian flags.

Kyiv had previously announced the capture of hundreds of Russian soldiers during its Kursk operation, which began on August 6.

Russia acknowledged the exchange, stating that it had successfully returned 115 soldiers captured during the Kursk incursion. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that these soldiers were now in Belarus, receiving “psychological-medical help” before their return to Russia. The ministry also released photos showing the soldiers near buses in a field.
