Numerous Injuries Reported After BRT Bus Overturns in Lagos

A government-owned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus, which had departed from the Iyana Ipaja BRT Bus Terminal and was en route to Obalende, was involved in a road accident at Araromi, Iyaya Ipasa inward Dopemu area in Lagos State around 6:35 am on Friday.

Numerous passengers sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident. Nosa Okunbor, Head of Public Affairs Unit for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident in a statement. According to Okunbor, the bus driver lost control while attempting to avoid hitting a pedestrian.

The victims were promptly taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

The statement from LASEMA reads: “Following distress calls to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines at 0635hrs, the Agency activated its Dolphin Response Team from the Igando Base.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the Dolphin Response Team discovered a fallen BRT Bus, registration number BDG 390 XR, loaded to capacity. Investigations revealed that the bus driver swerved suddenly to avoid a pedestrian hawking plantain from a wheelbarrow, causing the bus to climb the road divider and fall on its side.

“Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. While some passengers escaped unhurt, many sustained critical injuries and were taken to a hospital before the Dolphin Response Team arrived.

“All necessary safety measures have been activated to safeguard responders and road users during the operation. Primary responders at the scene are collaborating to ensure a speedy recovery of the fallen bus and restoration of normalcy to the BRT corridor.

“The fallen bus has been lifted upright and towed to Moshalashi Police Station near Alimosho roundabout with the assistance of a Tow Truck provided by the NPF officials at the scene.”
