NAUS, NAPS, NANCES Pass Vote Of No Confidence On NELFUND MD, Set For Protest

Student Associations Call for Resignation of NELFUND MD Over Transparency Issues

The National Association of University Students (NAUS), the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), and the National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) have collectively expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The student bodies have passed a vote of no confidence on the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND.

In a letter obtained by our correspondent, the associations accused the NELFUND leadership of lacking transparency in its operations.

The letter, addressed to the MD/CEO of NELFUND in Abuja, reads as follows:

The MD/CEO,
Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND),
Abuja.

Sir,

Letter of Dissatisfaction with NELFUND’s Activities, Lack of Transparency, and Notification of National Protest

We extend our greetings from the intellectual towers of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), and the National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students (NANCES).

These three associations represent the interests of university, polytechnic, and colleges of education students across Nigeria. We are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the welfare of our members.

Sir, NELFUND was established to support the well-being of students, ensuring they have access to education without financial barriers. As key stakeholders in NELFUND, we are deeply disappointed to find ourselves in the dark regarding its activities.

We are unaware of how student representatives in NELFUND are chosen, the criteria used for selecting loan beneficiaries, and why some students have received loans but not the associated upkeep. These and other issues reveal significant gaps in NELFUND’s operations.

In light of these concerns, we are passing a vote of no confidence in the leadership of NELFUND and demand the immediate resignation of the MD. We will hold a National Press Conference to inform the nation about the gaps and corruption within NELFUND.

Furthermore, we plan to shut down the NELFUND office on Tuesday, 2nd September, 2024, until competent leadership is appointed to ensure accountability, equal opportunity, and transparency.

Thank you.

Cc:
Minister of Education
Director of DSS

The student bodies are set to address the nation and take further action to demand accountability from NELFUND’s leadership.

JUST-IN: FG Issues Fresh Clarification On Age Limit For WAEC, NECO Examinations

Federal Government Refutes Age Restrictions for NECO and WAEC Exams

The Federal Government has dismissed rumors suggesting that age restrictions apply to the National Examination Council (NECO) and West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams.

Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, clarified this in Abuja on Friday, affirming that there are no age limits for taking these exams. He explained that the age restriction applies only to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and university entry, which will start at 18 years beginning in 2025.

Sununu pointed out that the National Policy on Education specifies that children should start primary school at age six, spend six years there, and then proceed to three years each in junior and senior secondary schools, totaling 18 years.

His remarks came during a briefing for the 2024 World Literacy Day, themed “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.”

Sununu addressed the confusion, stating, “We have clarified this issue in various forums, but the misinformation persists. Neither the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, nor I have announced any age limit for WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB exams.”

He added, “Some individuals have misinterpreted our comments regarding UTME age restrictions and mistakenly applied them to WAEC and NECO. Our previous statements only pertained to university entry age, as outlined in the National Policy on Education.”

Sununu also highlighted that the policy supports teaching children in their local language or mother tongue until primary three, after which English is introduced. This approach, he noted, facilitates better communication and learning.

The President encouraged Nigerians abroad to embrace their diversity, follow local laws, and project a positive image of their country. He stated:

“Nigeria is undergoing significant reforms, and we are making bold and unprecedented decisions. You might have heard recent news about fuel prices at home. But can we avoid these tough choices if we want to improve our infrastructure, like roads, electricity, and water supply?
