IG Orders Strict Compliance with New Standard Uniforms for Supernumerary Police
Inspector-General of Police (IG) Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun has instructed all organizations employing Supernumerary Police (SPY) personnel to comply with the new standard uniforms for these officers.
On Tuesday in Abuja, Egbetokun, represented by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mr. Bala Ciroma, announced this directive during the unveiling of the new SPY uniforms.
“As we introduce these new uniforms and kits, we require all organizations using SPY Police personnel to adhere strictly to these updated standards,” Egbetokun stated.
The Force Quartermaster and state personnel will assist with guidance on registration and acquisition of the new uniforms. Additionally, all Police Training Schools are directed to implement the new uniform issuance model for SPY Police personnel.
Egbetokun emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is taking active measures to curb the unauthorized production and distribution of police uniforms, including those for SPY officers. The launch of these new standard uniforms marks a significant milestone in improving professionalism and visibility among SPY personnel.

He pointed out that Section 21(7) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended) officially incorporates the Supernumerary Police as an integral part of the Nigeria Police Force.
This section outlines their powers, privileges, functions, and supervision by the Nigeria Police Force, ensuring a uniform visual identity.
Under Section 21 of the same Act, private organizations or government departments interested in utilizing SPY officers for property protection must apply to the IG.
Egbetokun acknowledged that despite the SPY Unit’s importance, it has struggled with establishing a distinct identity due to the absence of a standardized and recognizable uniform.
The current force management team, upon taking office, identified the need to enhance the role of the SPY Police Unit to better support national security and protection efforts.
