Gospel singer Sinach sued for N5BN over hit song ‘Way Maker’
In a shocking development, award-winning gospel singer Sinach has been slapped with a ₦5 billion copyright lawsuit by music producer Mayolee over her monster hit song “Way Maker“.
According to reports, the Federal High Court in Lagos heard the lawsuit on November 27, 2024, with Mayolee claiming ownership and publishing rights to the song. The producer alleges that he played a crucial role in the song’s success, recording, mixing, and mastering it, as well as creating key instrumental elements.
However, despite his contributions, Mayolee claims that Sinach has kept all the proceeds from the song without properly compensating him. He is seeking ₦5 billion in damages, a share of the song’s earnings, and legal recognition of his rights as a contributor.
Sinach’s team, however, insists that she is the sole creator of “Way Maker”, having written, arranged, and performed the song before Mayolee’s involvement. They claim that Mayolee was only hired to mix and master the final recording and was paid $300 for his work.
The lawsuit has sparked a heated debate about fair compensation, intellectual property rights, and the importance of formal agreements in creative collaborations. As the case progresses, it could set a significant precedent for resolving disputes in Nigeria’s rapidly growing music industry.
