Renowned Nigerian singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has clarified that he does not identify with the Afrobeats genre. In a recent episode of the ‘Afrobeats Podcast’ with Shopsydoo, Flavour expressed that he isn’t concerned about not being acknowledged for the global success of Nigeria’s Afrobeats, as he doesn’t consider himself an Afrobeats artist.
Flavour emphasized that his contribution to African music deserves recognition, but that isn’t happening because the media primarily focuses on promoting Afrobeats as the only genre from Africa.
“I don’t feel bad when I’m not given credit for the global rise of African music because the media is only discussing Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artist,” he stated.
“What I do is African music. There are artists like Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platinumz, who are advancing African music globally, and they aren’t Afrobeats artists either.
“Most of the time, the media just talks about Afrobeats, not African music. If the conversation is about African music, my name should naturally be included.”
The High-life star encouraged the media to broaden their focus and promote other popular African genres alongside Afrobeats.
