Lagos Police Declare Doctor Wanted After Fatal Buttocks Enlargement Procedure

The Lagos State Police Command has declared a doctor, identified as Idara Bassey, wanted in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman named Abiola, who tragically lost her life during a buttocks enlargement procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this development on Thursday. According to reports from ULTRANAIJA MEDIA, the incident occurred when Abiola visited the clinic for a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), a cosmetic surgery that involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to enhance its shape.

The procedure took a fatal turn after a nurse, allegedly following Dr. Bassey’s instructions, administered an injection. Despite prior warnings from medical experts about the potential risks of such procedures, the demand for BBLs has grown, especially in Lagos, where many women have shared their success stories online.

PUNCH Metro reports that Abiola had left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in Ibeju Lekki, on Monday, instructing her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure. After the injection was administered, Abiola reportedly lost consciousness and began gasping for breath.

The police have since arrested the nurse involved, while the clinic’s owner, Dr. Idara Bassey, has fled and is currently on the run. Hundeyin confirmed that Bassey is now considered a suspect in the case and is being actively sought by the authorities.

This incident echoes a similar tragedy in 2019, where a 31-year-old British woman named Melissa Kerr died during a BBL surgery at a private hospital in Istanbul. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported in 2023 that Kerr had not been adequately informed about the risks associated with the procedure before undergoing the surgery.

The Lagos State Police Command is continuing its investigation into the case as they work to locate and apprehend the fleeing doctor.
