Nigerian Doctors to Begin 7-Day Nationwide Warning Strike Over Abduction
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a nationwide 7-day warning strike starting on Monday, August 26, 2024, at midnight. This action is a response to the ongoing abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.
Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD’s President, made the announcement during an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council. He stated, “The strike will be total, with no concessions or emergency care provided during this period.”
Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew have remained in captivity for over eight months.
On August 15, 2024, NARD members staged a protest in Lagos against Dr. Popoola’s abduction, organized by the resident doctors of the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta.
