BREAKING: One Of World’s Largest Diamonds Found In African Country

A massive 2,492-carat diamond, one of the largest ever discovered, has been unearthed in Botswana. The Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp., which made the remarkable find, announced the discovery on Thursday.

The diamond was recovered from the Karowe Diamond Mine in northeastern Botswana, located about 430 kilometers (270 miles) from the capital, Gaborone. Lucara Diamond Corp. revealed the news in a statement but did not disclose the value or quality of the gem.

This impressive stone ranks close to the largest gem-quality diamond ever found—the 3,016.75-carat Cullinan Diamond, which was unearthed in South Africa in 1905.

“We are thrilled by the discovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond,” said Lucara’s president and CEO, William Lamb, in the statement. He described it as “one of the largest rough diamonds ever unearthed,” crediting the company’s advanced Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray technology for the find.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi was scheduled to view the colossal stone later on Thursday.

Botswana, one of the world’s leading diamond producers, relies heavily on diamonds as its primary source of income. Before this recent discovery, the largest diamond recovered in the country was a 1,758-carat stone, also mined by Lucara in 2019, and named Sewelo.
