The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, has passed away after undergoing surgery in Lagos. Ayilara, who had been battling prostate cancer, underwent surgery at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, on Wednesday. Unfortunately, he succumbed to complications early on Thursday.
A close family source confirmed the tragic news, stating, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Waheed Ayilara, Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State.”
Ayilara, who had been deployed to Akwa Ibom in February 2024, succeeded Olatoye Durosinmi, who was promoted to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in Lagos.
Enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ayilara served in various capacities throughout his career, including as Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Police Mobile Force Office in Abuja and Deputy Commissioner of Police in Oyo State.
Ayilara held a law degree from the University of Ibadan, a BL from the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, and a Master of Law degree from the University of Lagos. He will be buried according to Islamic rites on Thursday.
